Batavia, NY...For the sixth time running, Genesee County has been named one of the nation's top ten Micropolitans by Site Selection Magazine's Governor's Cup edition. A Micropolitan area is defined as a city with a population of 50,000 or less that serves as the seat of a region or county. There are currently 583 Micropolitan areas in USA and Puerto Rico. The Batavia Micropolitan and Genesee County were first recognized in 2004 and ranked 7th in the nation. In 2005, the Batavia Micropolitan was named the 3rd fastest growing Micropolitan in the nation and the number 1 location in the Northeast. Batavia made the list again in 2006, 2007 and 2008. In 2009, the Batavia Micropolitan was tied for seventh in the nation.

Batavia, NY...The official ground breaking of New York's first business park dedicated to Agri-Business took place this morning. The ground breaking ceremony for the Genesee Valley Agri-Business Park was held at the Kennedy Building of the Genesee County Fairgrounds, located at 5039 East Main Street Road in Batavia adjacent to the Ag-Park.

Local Students and Teachers Learn about Life Sciences Posted on Jul 28, 2009 by ttrav
John Kennedy elementary students learned about the Life Sciences at the first ever Bio-Tech Science Fair held this week. The event was organized in part by Batavia High School science teachers Burt Howell, John Kirkwood and Nate Korzelius. Funding for this event was provided through the College Tech Prep grant at Genesee Community College. Advanced Placement, or AP, science students from Batavia conducted hands on experiments with the elementary students covering topics like memory, saliva and DNA. "All the students, both older and younger, really enjoyed the day and learned a ton too. As one elementary student I spoke with said; this was the best day of the year, even better than the zoo!" Noted Kirkwood.

The Genesee County Economic Development Center received Honorable Mention for its Annual Report and its quarterly newsletter at the New York State Economic Development Council's annual meeting, held last week in Cooperstown, NY. The annual report named "Helping Genesee County Grow for 30 Years," was produced in house and printed locally by Hodgins Printing of Batavia. The report recognizes the agency's 30th anniversary.

Genesee County and the Batavia Micropolitan Area has been named one of the country's 10 fastest growing regions by Site Selection Magazine for a fifth consecutive year. A Micropolitan Area is a census definition that describes a city of less than 50,000 people that serves as the seat of a larger geographical area like Genesee County. There are roughly 600 Micropolitans nationwide.

Ohio has won the 2008 Site Selection Governor’s Cup, which the 55-year-old Atlanta-based magazine has awarded annually since 1978 to the U.S. state with the most new and expanded corporate facilities as tracked by Conway Data Inc.'s New Plant database. Conway Data publishes Site Selection, the oldest publication in the corporate real estate and economic development field, and the official publication of the Industrial Asset Management Council (IAMC, at www.iamc.org). Site Selection's yearly analyses are regarded by corporate real estate analysts as "the industry scoreboard." The magazine’s circulation base consists of 44,000 executives involved in corporate site selection decisions, most at the CEO/President/COO level.

The Pembroke Business Park, located less than 1 mile from Thruway exit 48A, at the corner of Routes 5 and 77 in Pembroke, has received a grant for $15,300 from National Fuel for infrastructure improvements. The 67 acre park sits in an Empire Zone and in the Niagara Power Authority's Hydro-power zone meaning occupants could benefit from low cost electric.

The newest business park in Genesee County will help technology companies put the pedal to the metal in the management of growth and development of products.
That was the message Dr. Bruce A. Holm delivered at Friday's groundbreaking for a new facility named in his honor, the Dr. Bruce A. Holm Upstate MedTech Centre in the town of Batavia.

Batavia, NY...National Grid has awarded the real estate affiliate of the Genesee County Economic Development Center $100,000 to be used for infrastructure at the Genesee Valley Agri-Business Park, a one of a kind park dedicated to Agri-business and food production. The grant was awarded through National Grid's Shovel Ready Infrastructure program and will help extend electric service into the 200+ acre park which is owned by a public/private partnership that includes the GCEDC and Farm Credit of Western New York.
