High-Tech Graduation Leads to Career Pathways

Twenty-four students graduated from the first ever Advanced Manufacturing and Nano-Technology Certificate Training Program today, in Batavia, NY.  These students were part of a regional pilot program designed to train workers in entry-level manufacturing skills for positions in companies around the state.

GCEDC Manufacturing Training Program on Track for Successful Graduation

The Genesee County Economic Development Center’s (GCEDC) Advanced Manufacturing and Nano-Technology Certificate training program has passed the halfway point and 24 students are on track to graduate on November 18, 2011.  Students have engaged in classroom work at Genesee Community College (GCC) and hands-on training at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT).

GCEDC ANNOUNCES GRANT PROGRAM COORDINATOR

The Genesee County Economic Development Center (GCEDC) is pleased to announce the addition of Michael J. Bakos as Grant Program Coordinator for the center's Advanced Manufacturing and Nano-Tech Certificate Training Program.  Mr. Bakos has over 30 years of managerial experience in the biomedical industry and holds an A.A.S. Degree in Electronic Technology from Erie Community College (ECC) as well as a B.S. Degree in Management from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). He is a resident
of Genesee County, serves on the Town of Pembroke Planning Board, and is President of the Akron-Newstead Rotary Club.

WNY STAMP Public Hearing at Alabama Fire Hall

Batavia, NY…..On April 14, 2011 during a board meeting of the Genesee County Economic Development Center (GCEDC) a resolution to approve the Draft Generic Impact Statement (DGEIS) for the Western New York Science Technology and Advanced Manufacturing Park was approved.  The DGEIS has been completed and accepted by the GCEDC as Lead Agency for the proposed action.

GCEDC SEEKS APPLICANTS FOR ADVANCED MANUFACTURING WORKFORCE CERTIFICATE

The Genesee County Economic Development Center (GCEDC)  is offering a pilot training program in Advanced and High Tech Manufacturing that will be offered this fall.  The program will be funded through a grant secured by the GCEDC in cooperation with Genesee County.  The minimum qualification to apply is a high school diploma or its’ equivalent.  Current high school seniors, who will graduate in June 2011, are eligible to apply.

In 2003, the Genesee County Economic Development Center (GCEDC) made a regional commitment as part of its economic development strategic plan to collaborate with area Universities centers (University of Buffalo, University of Rochester and Genesee Community College), state and federal agencies (Office of Community Renewal (OCR), NYSTAR, USDA Rural Development) and private sector partners to enhance the “commercialization capacity” of life science innovation in Western New York.

GCEDC TO OFFER ADVANCED MANUFACTURING WORKFORCE TRAINING

Over the last two years GCEDC had over 21 site visits by 10 high-tech companies who were interested in locating in Genesee County but expressed their concern that our area lacked the skilled workforce needed for their operations.  Seeking to put these concerns to rest, the GCEDC was awarded a $750,000 innovative grant from the New York State Office of Community Renewal for infrastructure in its’ Buffalo East Technology Park and to create a pilot workforce training program.  To this end, the GCEDC solicited a partnership with Genesee Community College (GCC) and the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) to plan, design, and implement a training model to attract high-tech companies.

NYS Senate Repeals Crippling IDA Tax Assessment

The 2009-2010 New York State Budget contained a statewide “cost recovery” tax on industrial development agencies (IDAs) of up to $5 million.  Genesee County Economic Development Center (GCEDC) in conjunction with many other IDAs across the state joined together to fight the tax through legal action.  The Attorney General’s Office agreed not to enforced, nor collected the tax in 2009-10 due to the legal action taken by the IDAs.

Batavia, NY & Genesee County Selected One of Nations Fastest Growing Micros

For the seventh year running, Genesee County has been named one of the nation’s top ten Micropolitans by Site Selection Magazine’s Governor’s Cup edition.  A Micropolitan area is defined as a city with a population of 50,000 or less that serves as the seat of a region or county.  There are currently 576 Micropolitan areas in USA and Puerto Rico.  The Batavia Micropolitan and Genesee County were first recognized in 2004 and ranked 7th in the nation.  In 2005, the Batavia Micropolitan was named the 3rd fastest growing Micropolitan in the nation and the number 1 location in the Northeast.  Batavia made the list again in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. In 2010, the Batavia Micropolitan was tied for ninth in the nation.

2010 Genesee County Employment Rises

The employment scene in Genesee County for year 2010, despite the Great Recession being in full swing, had positive results with regards to employment and job creation and retention across the county.  According to the latest figures just released from the New York State Department of Labor, Genesee County showed a net increase of 300 private sector jobs in 2010.  The growth rate of private sector job creation within the county reflected a 1.8% increase for the year.  This type of growth is encouraging as most communities across the state and country have been shedding jobs or are fighting to maintain the status quo during 2010.

Hyde Responds to Gov's State of Address
